Copper theft has become a serious problem throughout the country. The US Department of Energy estimates that the theft of copper pipes and wiring has turned into a $1 billion a year issue. Copper is being stolen because people are able to sell it at up to $4 per pound, making it a way for thieves to earn quick cash.

Copper is often stolen from abandoned homes and buildings, or commercial heating and cooling units. However, peoples homes are often targeted. The copper out of furnaces and air conditioners is stolen. Copper gutters and flashing are being torn off homes. The amount of property that is destroyed is usually always more costly than the amount of copper that is taken. This becomes an issue for the home or business owners, as they are the ones who must fix or replace damaged property.

However, more than money can be lost when copper is stolen. This was the case with a man in Iowa several years ago. Thieves accidentally cut a propane line while stealing copper pipes. This filled the house with gas. When the man plugged in a fan his home exploded, killing him in the process.

Legislation to curb copper theft has been receiving approval in Missouri. In 2008 the Missouri Senate gave substantial approval to legislation aimed at eliminating the copper theft crisis. The Bill requires stronger record-keeping on the part of scrap dealers. It is a felony to steal or unlawfully sell copper in Missouri.

How To Prevent Copper Theft

Even with these restrictions and consequences enforced, the crisis continues. How can you protect your home and family from copper theft?

• Remove landscaping or fencing from around your air conditioner to improve surveillance.

• Install more lighting around your home.
