$11.1 Million Awarded In Vaginal Mesh Case

Since 2005, there have been more than a thousand reports of problems with the Bard Avaulta mesh. 

The dangers of vaginal mesh have been in the news a lot lately. A jury has recently awarded $11.1 million in an Avaulta vaginal mesh lawsuit. There are hundreds more lawsuits being pursued against more than 30 vaginal mesh product manufacturers.

The victim was awarded $7.76 million in punitive damages by a New Jersey jury to be added to the $3.35 million in compensatory damages she had already been awarded in her lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is appealing the decision.

Since 2005, there have been more than a thousand reports of problems with the Bard Avaulta mesh. Hundreds of these women who have had major issues with vaginal mesh implants came together in a multidistrict litigation in the Southern District of West Virginia and will be heard by Chief Judge Joseph R. Goodwin. Those trials will begin soon.

The problems with vaginal mesh do not begin and end with Bard products. Vaginal mesh has been causing problems across the board.

Her Johnson & Johnson product caused her to experience terrible symptoms and her health was seriously at risk. She had to have 18 surgeries in order to correct the damage that was caused internally by her mesh implant.

Another plaintiff was awarded $5.5 million by a Kern County Superior Court jury In July 2012. Until she received the Bard mesh implant to correct a stress urinary incontinence she was a runner and was in excellent health. After receiving the implant, however, her health has rapidly deteriorated. Stress Urinary Incontinence is a common issue for women who are middle-aged and have had children. A mesh implant was one way to treat the problem and was supposed to be an easier procedure than previous options, but has appeared to have cause much more harm than good. The FDA has said that mesh may not be a better option at all and does not appear to offer any real benefit when compared with the original procedure.

Her mesh did not stay in place. Instead it migrated towards her colon and cut through her colon. It was very difficult to remove, however, because tissue grew through the mesh. As of July 2012 she has had eight surgical procedures performed to correct the subsequent problems caused by the Bard Avaulta mesh implant.

She believes that women should be aware of the potential problems caused by the mesh products and has regretted being silenced from speaking out on account of her ongoing lawsuit. This final resolution means that she can finally speak about her experiences.
