Aides Caught Abusing 96 Year Old Nursing Home Resident

An elderly woman’s daughters hid a camera in her room at the Quail Creek Nursing Home and Retirement Center when they began to suspect that someone was stealing from her. The video ended up showing much more than theft, however, when it caught two caretakers forcing rubber gloves into the woman’s mouth and appeared to show one of them shoving her head. Her daughters reported the abuse to the Oklahoma Department of Health in April of 2012, but have become frustrated because they feel that the case has not been sufficiently investigated. They claim that not enough actions have been taken to look into the allegations of abuse.

The Oklahoma Department of Health issued a statement in response that noted the case had been investigated and the two aides had been arrested, and one was incarcerated. They have a zero tolerance policy regarding nursing home abuse and took immediate action to look into the case. They went on to say that all incidents of abuse are investigated and homes are now required by law to report suspected criminal abuses to local authorities, which Quail Creek complied with. In this way the facility did take prompt action and took the necessary action to protect residents.

The woman’s daughters have said that if any such investigation took place, they were unaware. They still wonder if there was more abuse that took place than what they originally suspected and hope that other residents are not suffering from similar abuses.

In the 2011-2012 year the Oklahoma Department of Health investigated all of the 1,240 reports of abuse and cited 7,603 violations. In 404 cases the Department took action against facilities. And from 2009-2013 cited facilities 20 times for failing to protect residents.
